About Us

Our herds are predominantly Black Angus with some Simmental influence.  We do not use growth hormones or antibiotics, and we practice low stress handling to minimize distress in our herd.

We spend time with our herd each day to observe the condition of the plants in the pastures, monitor the health of each animal, and to maintain our friendship with the cows.  We talk to them and they recognize our voices, smell, and the clothes we wear.  This makes for calmer cattle when we do have to handle them in the chute or corrals, or help them with calving, or bring a new calf and it’s mom to the barn on a cold spring night.

History

Byelich Family Farm has been offering pasture-raised beef to local consumers since the mid-1970’s.

Dad started in Alcona County as the MSU Extension county agent in 1975, and a few months later he and mom purchased what we know now as Byelich Family Farm. As an ag agent, he was privy to all the new ag practices and research being promoted by MSU, and used some of that to get started with rotational grazing our beef cattle in the early 1980’s. Mom’s family has a legacy in raising cattle in northern Michigan since the late 1800’s, so the family farm benefits from that cow savvy that she brings. With this foundation, we have continued to intensify the grazing and optimize beef production. The farm is now being operated in this manner by three generations of the family.

“Our family has been practicing ecologically sustainable beef cattle production through 3 generations focused on the 4 pinnacles of faith, farm, family, and fun.”
